If you're browsing SPC flooring, you've probably seen the term "IXPE Underlayment." It's that colorful foam layer attached to the bottom of the plank. But is it just a marketing gimmick, or does it actually serve a purpose in a Malaysian home?
1. What is IXPE?
IXPE (Irradiated Cross-Linked Polyethylene) is a high-density, closed-cell foam. Unlike traditional PE foam which is "open-cell" (like a sponge), IXPE is waterproof and doesn't collapse under heavy furniture over time.
2. Acoustic Dampening & Foot Feel
One of the biggest complaints about rigid floors is the "clicking" sound when you walk. IXPE acts as a shock absorber, significantly reducing impact noise. This is especially important for upper floors in condos or terrace houses in Malaysia.

Can I use extra padding under SPC with IXPE? ＋
NO. Adding extra foam under SPC that already has IXPE will make the floor too "spongy." This causes the click-lock system to flex and eventually snap.
