The "Zero-Expansion" Lie: Why Cheap Floors Buckle in Tropical Heat
"Install it tight to the wall! It never expands!" This is perhaps the most dangerous lie told by unscrupulous flooring sellers in Malaysia. In physics, everything expands with heat. SPC is no exception.
1. The Tropical Heat Trap
When sunlight hits a floor near a balcony door in KL, that floor can easily reach 45°C. Even a rigid-core SPC will expand by a few millimeters over a 10-meter run. If there is no gap at the wall, the floor has nowhere to go but UP. This is what causes buckling or "popping."
2. Cheap Fillers vs. Quality Limestone
Quality SPC uses high-purity limestone. Cheap SPC uses recycled plastic and heavy chemical fillers that are much less stable. These budget planks are the ones most likely to buckle dramatically after just one hot afternoon.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big should the expansion gap be? +
In Malaysia, we recommend a minimum of 8mm to 10mm around the entire perimeter, hidden by skirting or L-profiles.
Can I fix a buckled floor? +
Sometimes. You may need to remove the skirting and trim the edges of the planks that are touching the wall to give the floor room to breathe and flatten out.
